NED KELLY BALLAD by 6W

In writing we have been learning all about Australian bush ballads.  6W wrote this wonderful ballad retelling the story of the famous Aussie bushranger Ned Kelly.  We hope you enjoy it!

The Life of Ned Kelly by 6W
Born in the Southern State of Vic; his last day was there too
The Kellys worked together but they started with no clue.
Red Kelly died a broken man, leaving Ned alone,
Young Ned was next in line to take his poor father’s throne.
(Catie & Bri)

Red Kelly, Ned’s old Dad, started out in jail,
But then he moved to Melbourne to use a hammer and a nail.
Ned was just like his Dad, stealing to survive;
Panning, sheering, boxing, cutting – just to stay alive.
(Trent & Luka)

Ned Kelly was brought up wrong by a criminal,
He killed a few policemen though that was minimal.
Ned Kelly and his gang were very deadly men.
Good thing he’s not around because that was way back then!
(Leah)

Ned’s gang got together, to plan their coming skip
He thought they were desperate; all they wanted was this trip.
They fought the chief with all their grief, for all they knew was crime
Ned, Dan, Steve and Joe were running out of time.
(Maddy & Claudia)
His heavy armour shimmers in the dark night sky.
With his heavy coat of mail, he will never die.
Down into the village you can hear him clash and clang.
He thought that iron shield would never let him hang.
(Edgar & Kai)

Ned Kelly was a brave man in his Armour made of tin.
Then he strode around Glenrowan town like a walking bin.
With his chest plate and his helmet like a big black shield.
He thought his Iron mail would stop him getting killed.
(Thomas, Ryan & Tyler)

The next planned robbery was the Bank of New South Wales,
He would never give up and never ever fail.
For robbery and violence, Ned was thrown in jail,
He fought single handed dressed in iron mail.
(Carla & Alice)

The squatters followed Ned Kelly to Glenrowan close behind
He ran into a wood shack, so he was hard to find
Ned Kelly fought the troopers, but the wood shack got burnt down
One of them got behind him and shot him out of town
(Steph, Grace & Lauren)

When the Kelly Gang heard the train arrive they knew their plan had failed,
All they could do was stay alive and try not to get jailed.
Ned Kelly was covered in black armour from head down to his waist,
But his knees were vulnerable to the troopers who gave him a lead taste.
(Luke & Liam)

Famous for it bloodiness, a great Aussie battle,
It started from stealing from rich blokes – gold, horses and cattle.
They took over Glenrowan Inn and threw a huge bash.
Tom was after the reward for the Kelly’s were made of cash.
(Adam & Sean)

Ned was hiding at the back of the old town house,
He sat there with his gang of thieves, as quiet as a mouse.
The police came in plentiful and quickly closed in;
Ned stumbled out wearing his old rusty tin.

Ned Kelly, oh he tried to run away and flee,
But unfortunately he was sadly shot in the knee.
Ned Kelly, oh it wasn’t fair, he was so very young.
But sadly he was an outlaw, and so he swung.
(Patrick & Riley)

Ned Kelly went to court and asked for mercy there,
The judge didn’t buy it and gave him quite a scare.
He had nothing else to do until he got hung,
He was put on the podium and up there he was strung.
(Renae)

Ned Kelly lost all those he loved the day that he got caught,
The day Ned got shot in the knee was the day that that he got taught.
The judge gave Ned a sentence that would leave him scared and stung,
Ned Kelly said his final words the day the he was hung.
(Rachel & Ella)

Ned Kelly was a criminal before he got hung
Ned Kelly laid like a puppet before he’d gotten strung
Ned Kelly laid under the ground before he turned to bones
Now he lays quiet and still underneath the stones.

(Nik & Tom)
